TD Is
.

Volkswagen TDIs are the most common car choices for fueling with biodiesel in the United States. Volkswagen was the only manufacturer to offer a diesel engine car in the United States in this millenium until Mercedes released the E320 CDI in 2004. The E320 CDI is out of the price range of most buyers, so the TDI is still the most common engine.

TDI stands for Turbo Direct Injection. It is a direct injection turbo charged diesel.

You can find TDIs in these cars for these model years:

Year Models
1996 Passat sedan, Passat wagon
1997 Passat sedan, Passat, wagon, Jetta sedan
1998 Jetta sedan, New Beetle
1999 Jetta sedan, New Beetle
1999.5 Jetta sedan, Golf, New Beetle
2000 Jetta sedan, Golf, New Beetle
2001 Jetta sedan, Golf, New Beetle
2002 Jetta sedan, Jetta Wagon, Golf, New Beetle
2003 Jetta sedan, Jetta Wagon, Golf, New Beetle
2004 Jetta sedan, Jetta Wagon, Golf, New Beetle, Passat Sedan, Passat Wagon, Touareg
2005 Jetta sedan, Jetta Wagon, Golf, New Beetle, Passat Sedan, Passat Wagon
2006 New Jetta (A5) sedan, Jetta (A4) Wagon, Golf, New Beetle, Passat Sedan, Passat Wagon

The Jetta was updated in the 2005.5 model year to a new model. The TDIs are coming for the 2006 model year (they just started arriving around June 2005). The Jetta Wagon isn't being updated yet and is expected on the market for the 2008 model year. A new Golf is expected for the 2007 model year. The Passat and New Beetle are getting upgrades in the next year or two as well, and it isn't clear if they will have TDI options in the US right away.

What does this mean? If you like the current cars get one while you can. I don't know if they'll keep making the Jetta Wagon in the old body style, or there just won't be a wagon option after the current ones run out.

There have been five TDI engines available in the US marketplace:

Engine Code Models Horsepower Torque
1Z, AHU (aka A3 TDI) 1996-97 Passat, 1997-99 Jetta 90hp 149ftlbs
ALH (aka A4 TDI) 1998-2003 New Beetle, 1999.5-2003 Everything else 90hp 155ftlbs
BEW 2004- New Beetle, Jetta, Golf 100hp 177ftlbs
??? 2004- Passat 134hp ??
??? 2004- Touareg 300+hp 500+ftlbs
